Keep a diary and to keep access to themselves has always been a project of Pavese. A little Less than twenty years, transcribes in the fair copy fragments of my past life, who come here to light for the first time. Leaked already, obsessive, the dominant of its way to transforming the world and others: Love, Death (suicide), Art. The political boundaries, in 1935-36, in Brancaleone, Pavese favorosce the revelation of himself in a real diary. It starts here, and does not stop until a few days before his death (1950), the business of living . Calvin still has reason to call it in this way: "Pavese's diary is both the search for a poetic technique and of a way of being in the world." But before he Solmi Sergio was asked a question that was appealing, almost, alla coscienza materiale e formale del Mestiere di vivere : "Giungeremo a dire che Pavese ha esercitato per lungo tempo una instancabile auto-terapia dell'anima?". L'attuale edizione del Mestiere di vivere , condotta sul manoscritto autografo, rivela anche graficamente il sorgere, piuttosto, e il maturare di uno stile dell'interiorità. Esso è frutto di una lenta conquista, ottenuta al di là degli anni 1937-38, quando, come dimostrano i segmenti di diario offerti ora non alla curiosità occasionale ma alla simpatia intellettuale del lettore, l'Amore si coniuga con la Morte, prende il sopravvento sull'Arte, e la personalità dell'artista rischia di distruggersi.
